This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
John Cabot the discoverer of North America and Sebastian his son; Henry Harrisse Books
I love the subject matter of this book as I am a believer that it was John Cabot, not Christopher Columbus who "discovered" America. Since Columbus never touched the mainland of the later United States, John Cabot sailed along the east coast of America and tried to map most of the inlets and rivers. Unfortunately, he died before he could return to England and make his reports. His son, Sebastian Cabot, working for the Spanish crown at that time, tried everything to discredit his father's findings and took the glory of the discovery for himself and the crown of Spain. Or so it seems from this book. The history is murky here.I only gave the book three stars because it is one of those books that has been scanned and reprinted with no attempt to edit it for organization of the material. I have done technical books myself in this same manner but always reorganized the material to make it understandable to the reader. In all pages in this book, the scan just copied everything, including page headings, page numbers, footnotes, and jumbled them together with the paragraphs, making it very difficult to follow the original writer's intent. There are many broken sentences with no clue where the rest went. It takes some work to locate the rest of the sentence.
But I'm glad the publishers gave this as a Kindle edition for less than two dollars! In the preface to this edition they make it clear that they didn't do any further work in THIS EDITION but also published a much better edition for about US$33. So I'm glad to have the material so cheaply and have to do my own editing (or learn to read it as-is), or pay the higher price for this work already done.
This is an important work for American and Canadian historians as it sheds light onto those earlier centuries when the great discovery was made. Columbus, indeed, discovered a new route to the west and found many islands and peoples of the Caribbean Ocean. He was followed by Cortez and others from Spain who wanted the gold and riches of the west for the crown of Spain. This book tells of the discoveries of John Cabot who took a northerly route -- not Columbus' route -- and then sailed down the coast, "discovering" the eastern seaboard of America as we know it.
