Twenty-three year old Kelsey Edmundson is a geek and proud of it. She makes no secret of her love for TV, movies, and, most especially, books. After a bad breakup, she retreats into her favorite novel, Pride and Prejudice, wishing she had some of the wit and spirit of Elizabeth Bennett.

One night at a party Kelsey meets handsome Australian bartender Mark Barnes. From then on, she always seems to run into him when she least expects it. No matter how Kelsey tries, she always seems to say the wrong thing.

After a particularly gaffe-filled evening around Mark, Kelsey is in desperate need of inspiration from Jane Austen. She falls asleep reading Darcy’s letter to Lizzy and awakens to find herself in an unfamiliar place that looks and sounds suspiciously like her favorite book. Has she somehow been transported into Pride and Prejudice, or is it just a dream?

As Kelsey tries to discover what’s happening to her, she must also discover her own heart. Is Mark Barnes destined to be her Mr. Darcy? In the end, she must decide whether attempting to become Elizabeth is worth the risk or if being Kelsey Edmundson is enough.

I loved the title and concept of this book. Modern literature geek, Kelsey Edmundson is a somewhat awkward young woman who discovers that she possesses a power that every literature geeks fantasizes about: the ability to jump into her favorite novel and inhabit the characters. This literary device gives Grey's readers a behind the scenes view into the fictional world of Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," as well as an imaginative meta-musing on how fictional worlds function. The novel within the novel becomes a vehicle for Kelsey on her journey to find herself. While Kelsey was not wholly likable as a main character, what real person is? We all have flaws, especially in our intimate interior. Unlike other reviewers, I can cut the character some slack. Actually, I found several aspects of Kelsey's personality and experience relatable, in particular her habit of metaphorically escaping into a fictional world. Rather than find fault with the fictional character, I found the writing somewhat redundant and the novel unsophisticated in execution. I was frequently irritated by the unpolished qualities of the narration and dialogue, and the rife typographical errors. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I make more than my share of typos and grammatical errors, but this self-published book would have greatly benefited from a good editor. While I could easily overlook these technical instances and continue on with the story, it is an unprofessional annoyance in a published book that readers paid for.

Attempting Elizabeth edition by Jessica Grey Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

When I heard about this book from one of my new favorite authors, Jessica Grey, I thought "Aw man, but I've never read Pride and Prejudice!" Still, I really wanted to check this one out so I read Pride and Prejudice specifically to understand Attempting Elizabeth. Now I love this book for two reasons. One it is a great novel with romance, humor and geek references galore. Two because it introduced me to another great book, Pride and Prejudice. Bottom line, read this book. If you haven't read Pride and Prejudice (honestly, I think I was the only person in the world over ten who hadn't), read Pride and Prejudice THEN read this book. However you decide to do it, READ THIS BOOK!! You won't be disappointed.
This was an enjoyable, different twist to Jane Austen's P&P. I had fun with it and even jumped a tad ahead of it toward the end. Ah! to be Elizabeth and meet the real Mr Darcy. Imagination is a great thing. Only objection is the editing in places was really bad with missing words and letters and duplicate words in the wrong place. With my own writings, I find that it takes at least 6 readings to find most of the mistakes. Our brains have a tendency to correct without letting us know they are doing it. Nevertheless, this book was a good read with a good ending. I'll be looking forward to more variations from this author.
A modern-day Pride and Prejudice with a twist! Kelsey has dated her fair share of Wickhams, and is so not interested when she meets the very un-Darcy Mark... or is she? A series of humorous meetings ensue, where Kelsey is not shown at her best (so very Darcy of her) until she drops a bomb on Mark - that she can literally jump into the characters in her favorite novel. Crazy!

Such a fun fun story. Kelsey is hilarious and Mark, oh my, totally drool-worthy! I absolutely adored when Kelsey jumped into her favorite characters, living through the behind-the-scenes of the book. It was such a fun twist on your typical modern-adaptation. On any adaptation really. What Janeite wouldn't want to be Elizabeth Bennet after all? And call me geeky, but the Star Wars references were totally fun for me as well. I absolutely connected with Kelsey.

My only complaint about the book is that it ended way too soon! I wanted more! And was bit bummed when the last 18 pages in the eBook weren't more story.

A definite recommend for any modern-day romance loving Janeite!
Jessica Grey has created one of the most imaginative Jane Austen-inspired stories I have ever come across. Kelsey Edmundson is an English major with a major crush on Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Darcy. Her real-life love-life is nothing like Regency England. Her boyfriends all seem more “Wickhamy” than Darcy-like. When she meets a good-looking Australian named Mark at a night club, she can’t seem to say anything right and ends up insulting him. When he shows up at her house the next morning, she is still in her pajamas with a hangover.
After agreeing to hike with Mark and some friends, she falls asleep rereading her favourite novel only to wake up as Georgiana Darcy just before Wickham proposes. In something similar to Groundhog Day, Kelsey keeps messing up as Georgiana and has to relive the day over and over.
Without adding spoilers, I have to say the Grey doesn’t stop there. This story continually surprised me with its twists and turns. I loved all of the pop-culture references and Regency details. If you enjoy Jane Austen and the fan fiction which has been inspired by her work, you do not want to miss this book. I especially liked how Grey related things that happened to Kelsey in Pride and Prejudice to what is happening in her regular life. Grey has a talent for dialogue and for making fantasy seem possible. It would make a lovely movie.
I have over 80 Austen adaptations on my App - this one may be the most original of the bunch. We all may l want to be Elizabeth, but who are we really? Is Darcy what we want or what we need?

Author Jessica Grey takes the story of Darcy and Elizabeth and brings it into modern fandom. She wraps the story of Kelsey and Mark in a crunchy coating of geeky goodness. This is a story for the sci-fi, cosplay, Star Wars-loving ardent admirers of Jane Austen. I can imagine that Jane would fit in perfectly with Kelsey and Tori ordering Chinese Food for breakfast and arguing passionately that Han shot first and why it's so important to the narrative.

Let go of your preconceptions and enjoy 'Attempting Elizabeth!'
